South Pointe Chevrolet can help you learn why your car is shaking when you brake.
As a driver, one of the worst feelings is when you can feel your vehicle vibrate when driving. Is it a nail in my tire, did a pothole hurt my suspension, or do I have a broken driveshaft? There are many things that might be the cause of the car vibrating, and the potential problems can vary greatly. The most common cause of the shuddering generally occurs in the vicinity of your rims and tires. The wheels and tires connect your vehicle to the road, and if anything is out of alignment, will feel it. It might be a broken caliper or a broken transmission mount. These more serious part failures may leave you stranded on the side of the road.

If you got new wheels and tires recently, then the vehicle shuddering could be caused by the tires not getting balanced correctly. Balancing the tires makes sure the weight is evenly distributed for the most peaceful ride possible. So, if you notice the tire shaking while you are driving, it may be an unbalanced tire. If the tires and wheels are properly balanced, but the car is still shuddering, check to make sure the lugnuts are fully tightened, and make sure the tire pressure is correct. If your tires are the cause of the shake, you should have it checked out immediately.
If your car shudders when you brake, that’s a pretty obvious indicator that you might want to have the brakes looked at. The most likely cause of your steering wheel shudder is warped rotors. When a driver pushes down on the brake pedal, brake pads compress against the brake rotors to stop your car. A smooth surface will give you smooth braking. A warped surface will cause vibrations when braking, sort of like how a brick road feels bumpier than an asphalt highway. Other causes of the shaking include frozen calipers or damaged shocks. If you feel your steering wheel begin to wobble, bring it in to get it inspected.
If a car is shuddering before you ever start driving, then there’s a good chance that you have some broken car parts. The most common reasons for your car shaking at idle are:
The Driveshaft has Broken – If damaged or not perfectly balanced, it could be the source of the shakes
Bad CV joints – Working together with the driveshaft, cv joints get the engine power to the wheels and tires and, if damaged, can be the cause of your vehicle shaking.
Broken Engine Mounts – As the name indicates, these components help affix the engine to the vehicle. If they are worn or broken, it can allow your engine to engine vibrate under the hood.
